Alice Irene Vardell went home to be with the Lord at 97 years of age on Monday, July 3, 2006. Irene was born January 2, 1909 to John and Jessie Vaughan, in Briscoe County, Texas.
She married William Luther Vardell on July 24, 1929 in Silverton, Texas. Their two oldest daughters, Peggy and JoAnn, were born in Briscoe County, Texas. In 1941, Luthers job with the Santa Fe Railroad took them to Clovis where their two youngest daughters, Kay and Rita, were born. Irene worked at the Clovis High School Cafeteria from 1958-1970. She loved to cook and was best known for her sweets. She also loved to sew and do yarn crafts. Irene and Luther both enjoyed a good game of 42 with family and friends. They both loved to travel, especially when it was to see their grandchildren. Their travels took them to almost all the contiguous states, as well as to Bermuda, Germany, and France.
For the past two years Irene lived in Albuquerque where she loved frequent visits from her family. Irene and Luther celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary prior to Luthers death in 1995. She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and two sisters.
Irene is survived by her sister Gladys Brannon of Chillicothe, Texas and her brother, Herschel Vaughan, of Hollis, Oklahoma; her four daughters: Peggy Dave Olsen of Flagstaff, Arizona; JoAnn Walton of Albuquerque; Kay Alan Brewer of Williamsburg, Virginia; and Rita Bob Martinez of Albuquerque; her seven grandchildren: John Olsen of Colorado Springs, Colorado; David Patty Olsen of Seabeck, Washington; Lorraine David Wickenhauser of Coulterville, California; Dean Walton of Souffriere, St. Lucia; Sharon Walton Michael Gillespie of Albuquerque; Kam Anna Brewer of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania; and Kevin Lisa Brewer of Newport News, Virginia; and her nine great-grandchildren: Jason and Jeffrey Olsen of Seabeck, Washington; Matthew and Sarah Wickenhauser of Coulterville, California; Michael Dean and Drew Gillespie of Albuquerque; Alexander Brewer of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania; and Amanda and Kamrick Brewer of Newport News, Virginia; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be held Friday, July 7, at 1:00 p.m. at Steed-Todd Funeral Home. Elder T. Ray Little will officiate at the service. Burial will follow at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis. Pallbearers are grandsons and great-grandsons, David Olsen, Dean Walton, Kam Brewer, Matthew Wickenhauser, Michael Dean Gillespie and Drew Gillespie.
