Andrew Andy Chitwood age 98 of Clovis was born September 11, 1909 in Hollis, Oklahoma to Seeborn and Nancy M. Anderson Chitwood. He passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at Retirement Ranch in Clovis. In 1914, Andy at 4 years old moved with his family to Broadview, NM in a covered wagon. Andy and his older sister drove the mares and mule colts alongside the wagon. After completion of the 8th grade at Ruth school, he took the state exams and received an 8th grade teaching certificate. He then attended Hollene school while the Ruth school was being rebuilt. He returned to the new Ruth school where he graduated from high school. During these years he met his future wife, Vera Estell Briggs they married August 16, 1926 in Farwell, Texas. They where blessed with one son Howard Chitwood. In 1946, he moved to Clovis and formed Clovis Oil Company he also was a farmer rancher for many years in the Clovis area. He was the President of the Woodman of the World Lodge 41, President and member of Curry County Farm and Livestock Bureau, Organizer and First President for 10 years of Eastern New Mexico Telephone Cooperation, early supporter of deep well drilling irrigation, elected State Democratic Representative from 1950 1960. He was appointed Director of Reciprocity and Proration Department of the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division, Member of the Curry County Board of Equalization, President and Board Member of Clovis AARP Chapter 1038; President of Curry County Council on Aging, member of the Clovis Commission of Older Adults. He was very active with the Curry County Senior Olympics formally serving as President; and was a member of the Senior meals association. He enjoyed playing bingo, dominoes and attended the Mens Bible Class.
He is survived by his grand daughter Sandra Reeves of Hoboken, New Jersey; daughter in law Irma Chitwood of Clovis; great-granddaughter Ali Hubby of Hoboken, New Jersey and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, his son, parents, 2 sisters, 1 brother, and one grandson Randal Chitwood.
Services will be held Monday, February 11, 2008 at Steed-Todd Chapel in Clovis at 10:00 a.m. with Dr. Herbert Bergstrom officiating. Burial will follow at the Hollene Cemetery in Hollene, New Mexico. Pallbearers will be Buddy Hubby, Billy McCasland, Don McCasland, Thomas Harden, Hershel Parker, Joe White and Mariano Saiz. Honorary Pallbearers are all his friends and the Staff and Nursing Staff of Retirement Ranch. Memorial contributions may be made to the Senior Olympics or Baxter Curren Hall. Andrew Chitwood, 88, of Clovis, New Mexico, died Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at Retirement Ranch in Clovis.
