Former Clovis elementary school teacher, Evelyn Francis, died peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2008, at the Settlers Ridge Care Center in Celina, Texas, where she has been a resident the past four years.
Mrs. Francis lived her life in Texas and New Mexico. She was born in Moriarty, New Mexico, on March 17, 1918, to Bruce and Margaret Ann Plummer. She grew up as one of eight children in Hereford, Texas. In 1940, she graduated from Texas Technological College in Lubbock with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics Education. After college, she began her professional career as a county extension agent in Vernon, Texas. In August, 1942, she married Claude Francis in Dallas, Texas. They returned to Hereford where Mrs. Francis served as dietician for the Hereford Public Schools. In 1957, Mrs. Francis and her family moved to Clovis where she and her husband both worked for the Clovis Public School System. Mrs. Francis initially taught home economics at Marshall Junior High School. She later taught fifth grade at Eugene Fields Elementary and then at Lockwood Elementary. While teaching in Clovis, she earned a Masters Degree in Education from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Iota. She retired in 1978 and continued to live in Clovis until 2003, when she moved to North Texas.
Mrs. Francis was preceded in death by her husband in May, 1968.
She is survived by her sons, Jerry Francis of Phoenix, Arizona and Steve Francis of Plano, Texas. Mrs. Francis is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Shelly Francis, and two granddaughters, Jordan Francis and Karsten Francis of Plano, Texas, and by her sister, Marian Lindell of Saline, Michigan, and her brothers, Ben R. Plummer of Hereford, Texas, Edwin Plummer of Phoenix, Arizona and Melvin Plummer of Farmers Branch, Texas.
Mrs. Francis was a Christian and, during her forty-six years in Clovis, belonged to the Kingswood United Methodist Church where she was active in the church choir.
Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 28, 2008, at the Steed-Todd Chapel in Clovis with Dr. Brad Reeves officiating. Burial will be follow at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens.
