Barbara Evelyn Black, age 88, of Clovis, died Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. She was born October 11, 1922 to Claude and Ruby Garrett of Bowie, Texas. Her family moved to Terry County, Texas when she was very young. She graduated from Brownfield High School in 1940. Barbara married Byron Black, her childhood sweetheart, in 1941 shortly before his enlistment in the Army Air Corps during WWII. In 1946, they moved to Curry County to begin farming near Broadview, New Mexico. They moved to Clovis in the early 1950s where her husband was involved in construction, farming and real estate.
Barbara was a housewife and a loving mother who with her husband raised two sons, Jerry and Jimmy. Both sons graduated from Clovis High School and Colorado State University. She was an accomplished artist who also enjoyed playing Bridge with many of her friends in Clovis. She also enjoyed traveling with her sisterinlaw and good friend Billie Hamilton. Barbara was an active member of the 16th and Pile Church of Christ in Clovis for over 58 years.
She is survived by two sons, Jerry Melinda Black of Loveland, CO, and Jimmy Debbie Black of Lubbock, TX three grandsons, Rodney Megan Black of Los Angeles, CA, Brandon Black of Ft. Collins, CO, and Andrew Ormiston, of Modesto, CA three greatgrandchildren, Skyler, Vance, and Pierce Black one brother, Charles Wayne Garrett of Midland, TX and one sisterinlaw, Billie Hamilton of Clovis.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and her sister and brotherinlaw, Claudine and Harold Stice.
Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, January 28 at 16th and Pile Church of Christ in Clovis, with Garrett Bookout and Bob Stice officiating. Burial will follow at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis. Casket bearers will be Ronnie Montague, Howard Pipes, Kenneth Barnett, Jerry Hailey, Kenneth Jones, and Don McCasland. Honorary casket bearers will be Bruce Smith, Bob Norris, Bobby Davis, Paul Tankersley and the Elders and Deacons of the 16th and Pile Church of Christ.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the New Mexico Christian Childrens Home, 1356 New Mexico 236, Portales, NM 88130.
