Bill J. Roberts, age 80, of Melrose, passed away Thursday, April 7, 2011 at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales. He was born on March 12, 1931 to Ebb and Estele Dennis Roberts in Gould, Oklahoma.
He then moved to the Field Community where he graduated high school in 1949, and served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. Bill met Edith Houghtaling in Artesia while he was working for the railroad, and married her there on December 29, 1957. They returned to the Field Community in 1963, and began farming and ranching until he passed away. Bill never met a stranger, enjoyed his kids, playing 42 and helping others.
Bill is survived by his wife, Edith Roberts, of Melrose one daughter, Karen Roberts Lesley Brown of Amarillo, Texas three grandsons, Chase Kristy Roberts of Melrose, Cutter Roberts of Melrose, and Andy BrownRoberts of Amarillo two granddaughters, Grace and Katherine BrownRoberts of Amarillo one greatgranddaughter, Rylee Roberts of Melrose two greatgrandsons, Guner and Gage Roberts of Melrose and a daughterinlaw, Sheila Roberts of Melrose.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother and sister one son, Kevin Roberts in 2001 and one grandson, Kyke Roberts in 1985.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 11, 2011 at the new gym in Melrose, 100 E. Missouri, with Joby Houghtaling officiating. Honorary casket bearers are all of Bills family and friends. Cremation will follow.
