Billie Joe Grider 76, of Melrose, NM died Monday, September 16, 2013 near Anton, Hockley County, Texas due to an automobile accident. He was born June 23, 1937 in Clovis, New Mexico to Ernest and Vada Grider. He married Marie Stevens, daughter of John and Dorothy Stevens, on January 11, 1958 in Silver City, New Mexico. To that union were born 4 children.
Joes early youth was spent on a farm southwest of Melrose, NM. He spent his teenage years in Sierra County after the family moved there in 1946. He drove a school bus while in High School and graduated from Hot Springs High School in Truth or Consequences, NM. He then worked in the mines around Silver City, NM, before he and his new bride returned to eastern New Mexico where he lived the remainder of his life. He was a rancher and farmer before spending many years as an employee of Farmers Coop and Melrose Grain, retiring from that occupation.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marie, on July 8, 2010, his parents, Ernest and Vada Grider, and brothers Glen, Winfred, Robert and Wes Grider.
Survivors include his children: Cindy Leroy Berkley of Las Vegas, NV, Shirley Jim Wood of Capitan, NM, Randy Grider and Patsy Grider of Melrose, NM, five grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren, and one sister, Claudine Davis of Caballo, NM. Cremation has taken place and no services are planned.
