Cassie Cameron

May 16, 1930 — January 21, 2011

Cassie Auldine Dean Callaway Downey Cameron of Clovis, NM, joined her friends and family in Heaven on Friday, January 21, 2011. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 25, at Sandia Baptist Church, officiated by Jack Spencer and Dr. Herbert Bergstrom. Final interment will be at 2:00 at Blair Cemetery between Wheatland and Cameron, NM. Dean was born May 16, 1930, in Oakwood, OK, to Albert and Lauretta Morris Callaway. Her father was a railroad foreman. As a child, she migrated from site to site in a railroad car fixed up as a cozy family home. Dean was the oldest of four children.

On December 21, 1946, she married Russell Downey and lived on the Burns Downey Ranch, northwest of Ranchvale, NM, for decades. She was involved in her childrens education and volunteered for many school events. She was extremely proud of her six children and their accomplishments both in school and in 4H.

On June 2, 1979, she married Wallace H. Cameron at Sandia Baptist Church. This union added two more young men to her list of precious children. Wallace and Dean enjoyed traveling as well as being at home. They often had a large garden and canned their produce. She always looked forward to her childrens birthdays and holidays when everyone would gather at her home and she would prepare lavish meals in celebration of the event.

Cooking was one of the many ways she shared love with the world. On Thanksgiving, she would prepare as many as 50 turkeys to be served at events at church, the Baptist Student Union at Eastern New Mexico University, the Baptist Childrens Home, as well as anywhere else that might have a hungry person.

Dean accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior as a teenager and spent her life as a devoted Christian and a member of the Baptist Church. She served as a Sunday School teacher, a nursery worker, and volunteered for numerous church committees throughout the years, including the Church Hospitality Committee. She was a proud member of WMU Womens Mission Union and Gideons International and served on the board of the Baptist Childrens Home.

Dean was civicminded and looked forward to the opportunity to work in local, state, and national elections. She has taken thousands of meals to shutins through the Meals on Wheels program. For many years, Dean was out and about, driving one of her little ladies to a local doctor and even for doctor appointments out of town. She never met a stranger and always made people feel welcomed and included.
