Clayton Burch

May 16, 1959 — December 28, 2024

Clayton Arthur Burch was born on May 16, 1959 and passed away in Bristol, Virginia, on December, 28, 2024. Clay was born in Clovis, New Mexico to Waylon Don and Betty Burch. He lived most of his life in Clovis where he worked for the Clovis Municipal School District. While growing up he was a gymnast and loved being involved with family activities. Later in life he moved to Bristol Virginia with family.

Clay was a beloved father, cherished friend, and proud Army Veteran. His family referred lovingly to him as "Grumpy." He cherished this nickname that was given to him by his Grandchildren. Clay was a man of few words, but boundless spirit. He was a rambunctious soul whose presence could light up any room with his infectious laugh or his often, contrary, yet loved opinions.

Clay was a proud American and dedicated soldier. He served his country with honor. While he was serving in the Army he earned the respect of his comrades with his unwavering loyalty, quick wit, and nonsense attitude. His time in the military was marked not just by duty, but by a deep sense of pride and service. Every challenge was an opportunity to stand strong. Clay embodied the 7 core Army Values, and upheld the warrior Ethos and Spirit de Corps. He was a prime example of our Nation's warriors through his dedication to duty and selfless service.

"Grumpy" may have been known for his sometimes, gruff demeanor, but those who knew him best understood his heart of gold. He took pride in his role as Dad, offering support and guidance in his unique way. His wisdom, often delivered with a wink, or a sharp word, will be deeply missed by those fortunate to be in his circle. Clay's boisterous spirit never dimmed. He always maintained his love for his family and friends. He loved watching old war movies and sitcoms. He often offered unsolicited advice, and shared stories of days gone by. He kept those around him on their toes and full of laughter.

Grumpy leaves behind a family that will miss his humor, strength and loyalty. He is survived by: Stephen Willmon, Jeffery Willmon, Margo and Jason Wilburn, Megan Byrd and Nathaniel Albertson, Ariana Thomas, Audrey Wilburn, Nathan Holt, Jax Wilburn, Kaylee Asani, and Aiden Byrd Wilburn.
