Coke C. Cates, age 80, of Clovis, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at his home in Clovis. He was born on December 9, 1930, in Ben Wheeler, Texas, to Coke and Lovie Green Cates.
Coke moved to New Mexico when he was 12 and graduated from Grady High School. He attended Eastern New Mexico University for two years, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Coke married Peggy Donahey on October 2, 1955, in Texico, New Mexico. He farmed and ranched in the GradyBroadview area for many years, and moved to Clovis in 1989. He was a member of Farm Bureau and loved to work with wood, gardening, and was an all around handyman who loved to help people. Coke loved his family, grandkids, and hunting, and liked watching basketball.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Cates, of the home two sons, Ken Vicki Cates of Midland, TX, and Gary Kim Cates of Panhandle, TX one sister, June Teddy Tunnell, of Brenham, TX and four grandchildren, Courtney, Kenzy, Jett and Jenna.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at Parkland Baptist Church with Pastor Don Robertson officiating, and Pastor Wayne Boydstun assisting. Burial will follow at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens. Casket bearers will be Steve Bailey, Jimmy Schell, Lonnie Scott, Jerry Dean Isler, Bill Page, and Kim Nelson. Honorary casket bearers will be Paula C.W. Ayers, Max Frazer, Lloyd Hinderliter, Floyd Fisher, John Crow, Gene Jameson, Rod Petty, and all of Cokes friends and neighbors.
