Douglas Williams

April 10, 1923 — December 20, 2013

Douglas Harry Williams was born on a farm east of Grady, New Mexico on April 10, 1923 to Claude Samuel Williams and Donna Wall Williams. He passed away December 20, 2013 at Wheatfields Senior Living Community.

After his graduation from Grady High School in 1941, he went to Chilicothe, Missouri to attend Telegraphy School. When he finished school, he came to Clovis and began working as an Operator for the ATSF Railroad. During World War II he served with the 14th Traffic Regulation Group in Iran and as a Paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division Medical Company in Japan. After his discharge, he returned to Clovis to work for the ATSF Railroad. He served as a Telegraph Operator at various locations from Clovis to Mountainair and Dexter. While working at Dexter he met Mary Lou Barbe and they were married on June 14, 1947. In 1950 they moved to Clovis and he began working as a Train Dispatcher. He retired in 1983 with 41 years of service.

In 1956 they bought a small acreage southeast of town. He loved working on his little farm and raising various animals. For several years they raised a large garden and sold the produce to area people. They later bought a camper and boat and did a lot of camping and fishing with family and friends. In 1996 they sold the farm and moved to town.

Family was very important to him. He loved playing with the grandchildren and great grandkids and taking them on trips. He could be found down in the floor playing, outside swinging them or playing ball and even going down the slide with them in his early 80s. They babysat greatgranddaughter Korie for several years and great grandchildren Baleigh, Ethan and Ashton from the time they were born until they started school.

He was an active member of the 16th Pile Church of Christ for over 63 years where he served as a deacon in his earlier years.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Lou, by his son, Roy of Georgetown, TX, and his daughter Delores Jay Swartz of Clovis. Grandchildren are Rebecca Williams of Plano, TX, Roy Lynn Teresa Williams of Santa Fe, NM, Ronnie Jessica Williams of Ft. Worth, TX, Latisha Swartz of Plano, TX, Larissa Gabe Apodaca of Clovis, Doug Lauren Swartz of Lubbock, TX. Great grandchildren are Korie Holamon, Baleigh Williams, Daisy Williams, Ethan and Ashton Encinias and step great grandchildren Roman and Genessa Apodaca. He is also survived by a brother, Melton Williams and a sister Oleta Mayfield both of Amarillo and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, C.R. Williams.
