Durward Kenneth Bell of Clovis NM passed away on Thursday August 28, 2014 surrounded by friends and family at his home. He was born on April 2, 1929 to Joe and Maurine Bell of Pleasant Hill New Mexico and was preceded in death by his parents and his two siblings Forrest Bell of Shreveport LA and Gladys Pierce of Clovis NM.
Born and raised as a farmer Durward owned his own farming operation which was close to the New Mexico and Texas state line only eight miles from Bovina Texas. He grew many crops ranging from corn and cotton to such things like sugar beets to make sugar. Other avenues of farming included raising livestock such as cattle and horses.
Mr. Bell was an amateur craftsman creating works of art from wood his whittling pieces included a wide variety of objects from small pens to ambitious furniture pieces. Many of his creations were given away as gifts. Aside from his woodwork Durward had a passion for golf, fly fishing and church. He was a member of the Bovina United Methodist Church in Bovina TX and Kingswood United Methodist Church in Clovis NM. Durward sang as a tenor in the choir lending his voice to service. He held several positions within the church including acting as a deacon, teaching Sunday school, and volunteering as a general handy man fixing whatever needed fixing. Durward was also an active member of the Lions Club in Bovina TX. During tenure in the Lions Club, which lasted between 10 to 15 years, he served as the president of the club from time to time.
Durward is survived by his wife of 65 years Fern Bell of Clovis NM Children Karen Grissom Royce of Grand Junction CO, Greg Bell of Ruidoso NM Grandchildren Caprice Scott Richard of Walla Walla WA, Cody Grissom of Denver CO, Will Bell Beth of Mineola TX, and Kasey Bell of Dallas TX Greatgrandchildren Shannon Baker of Walla Walla WA and BeBe the loving family poodle.
