Fern Metcalf

Fern Metcalf, 85, of Clovis, a retired school teacher, died Thursday, November 8, 2007 at Retirement Ranch of Clovis. She has resided at the Retirement Ranch in Clovis since 1997.

She was born on April 16, 1922, in Wellington, Texas, to Virgil and Alice Andrew. In 1925 the family moved to a farm about six miles east of Clovis. Ferns first year in school was at Texaco. The school years that followed were all spent in Clovis. She graduated from high school in Clovis in May 1939. Fern continued her education at the Nazarene College in Bethany, Oklahoma.

On July 31, 1940, she married Ivy Metcalf in Clovis. Fern worked five years as secretary at Parkview Elementary School. She resigned and went back to school and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from ENMU in 1960. She then began her career as a teacher. She taught school at Parkview Elementary. She continued her schooling at ENMU during the summers and received her Master of Arts degree in July 1964. Fern continued to teach school at Parkview for 23 years. Fern retired from teaching in May 1983.

Church played an important part in the Metcalf household. Fern and her family attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Clovis. Fern was active in the choir and served as part time choir director. She also served as a Sunday School teacher.

Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Ivy, her brother, C. L. Andrews, and sisters, Leona Baker and Pearl Omega Kamps. She is survived by two sons, Mel Metcalf of Lancaster, California, and Ed Metcalf of El Cajon, California, six grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10AM, Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at the First Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Dr. Janine Metcalf and Pastor Darwin Speicher officiating. Pallbearers will be Ken James, Jim Hunsucker, Bob Burch, Max Kralicek, Wayne Burch, Wilbur Cogdill, Phil Teakell, Dale Paul. Burial will be at Mission Garden of Memories in Clovis. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene. Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home of Clovis.
