Grover Meeks

Grover Wallace Meeks (December 1921 – January 2021) was a man who inspired gratitude to God that he was our father, grandfather, and brother.

He was born in Lane, Oklahoma, on the shortest day of the year, December 21. It was 1921.  He lived almost a century, and was the first of nine children born to Grover Cleveland Meeks and Mary Mae Elledge.  Surely, the long life of Grover Wallace was at least in part due to the Lord's blessing to those who honor their parents.  His family witnessed his faithful Sunday visits to his mother.  He told tender, funny stories of family struggles that endeared his mother and father to his children.  He was a good big brother, too.  His siblings benefited from his unselfish care and concern for them.  Four of his sisters survive him:  Virginia (Jeanne) Meeks of Clovis, NM; Levetta Makeig of Lake Worth, TX; Joann Walker of Fort Worth, TX; and Freida Meeks of Texico, NM. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers Lewis, Jesse, and Leon; one sister Tommie Murdock and by one granddaughter, Cindy Lue Meeks.

Grover Wallace Meeks accepted Christ at a camp meeting he attended when he was a teenager, and when asked in recent years if he knew Christ, he was would say "I accept Christ every day."  The fruits of his life included acts of kindness on a daily basis: building homes for one who could pay little, providing low income housing, and kindly extending grace to those in need. He paid his way in life and raised a brood of seven children, nineteen grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.  His seven children are Virginia (Jeanne)Morton of Lubbock, TX; Linda Atwell (Bobby) of Arlington, TX; James (Jimmy) Meeks (Lawanda); Debbie Richardson; Donna Meyer (Stuart); Tonya Von Hoene (Greg); and Paul Meeks all of Farwell, TX. He is also survived by his dedicated caregiver, Olga Castillo, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Grover was inducted into the Army from 1942 to 1945, during WWII, landing at the beach during the Normandy Invasion. He was awarded the EAME campaign medal with five bronze stars for 5 conflicts, A good conduct medal, and WWII Victory medal.  After the war, at age 25, he met and married Doris Francel Stovall of Farwell, TX. They had 65 years together until she preceded him in death on September 21, 2012.  Together they lived in New Mexico, California, and Texas; and in 1964, settled in Farwell where he lived the last fifty-eight years of his life.  He was a carpenter most of his life.  He loved his family, (happiest with a baby on his knee) and horses with all his heart. On January 14, 2021, the clouds parted and heavens gates were opened to welcome him home.

Pastor Furgus Tunnell will conduct a graveside service at Sunset Terrace in Farwell, TX, on Monday, January 18th at 2:00 Central time. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

Grover Wallace Meeks (1921-2021) Daddy, Granddad, Great Grandad, Great-Great Granddad will forever be loved and missed. Go rest high on that mountain, son you’re work on Earth is done. Go to hea-ven a shouting, love for the father and the son.
