Hazel Lee Luck Mayer, the second child of Barney and Rebecca Luck, was born on January 2, 1916 in Fillmore, Oklahoma. She passed away June 8, 2008 at Epworth Villa Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where she had been a resident for the past 14 years. She was a graduate of Capitan High School, New Mexico with BA and MA Degrees from Eastern New Mexico University ENMU. She also received certificates for Special Education from the University of Denver and San Diego State University.
She began her teaching career in Alto, New Mexico in 1934 with various teaching positions in Lincoln and Artesia, New Mexico, as well as Washington, DC and then to Clovis, New Mexico. In Clovis, she was a pioneer in organizing a Special Education Class giving her the distinction of being the first Special Education teacher in the First Special Education class in the State of New Mexico. She continued to teach until retiring in 1981 having taught 41 years. She was a member of the Eastern New Mexico District, State and National Education Association; Curry County, State and National Association for Retarded Citizens, Eastern District, State and National Council for Exceptional Children and the Eastern District Mental Health Association, all of Clovis, New Mexico; Alumni Association Capitan High School; Alumni Association Eastern NMU; Central Baptist Church, and Chapter AB of PEO, both of Clovis, New Mexico. Her awards include New Mexico Outstanding Special Education Teacher 1956; Clovis Business and Professional Woman of the Year 1960; Clovis Beta Sigma Phi Woman of the Year 1974; Whos Who of American Women 1964-1965; Clovis Education Association Teacher of the Year 1976; New Mexico Education Association Teacher of the Year 1976; Outstanding Alumni ENMU 1978; and Inducted into New Mexico Southeastern District Educators Hall of Fame 1982.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Will M. Mayer, three sisters, Gracie England, Louise Perkins and Mary Lou Skipper, and a brother, Barney Lee Luck Jr. She is survived by her sister, Reba Jean Barber, numerous nieces, a nephew and their families. Hazel loved her family and never missed a birthday or Christmas without sending that special brand new dollar bill to each of her nieces and nephew. She continued the tradition with the grand nieces and nephews and took pride in displaying their pictures. She made an attempt in visiting each of them in their home as often as possible.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at Steed Todd Chapel , in Clovis , New Mexico . Pallbearers will be Jerry Conner, Richard Conner, Jerry Conner, Jr., Robert Barber, Bill Biffle, Tom Hill, and Doug Covington.
