Helen Hunker

Helen Barry Hunker, a resident of Clovis, New Mexico, passed away August 14, 2009, at Retirement Ranch in Clovis. She was born July 3, 1920 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to James Mary Gannon Barry.

She graduated from Simon Gratz High School in Philadelphia in 1939. During her early twenties, she served as a member of the Catholic U. S. O. United Servicemans Organization and was a dancer and entertainer for the troops. She married Daniel Michael Maher on September 4, 1944 and they later moved to California. She graduated from the nursing program at El Camino College in Torrance, California. She was preceded in death by Daniel in 1970. She worked in nursing to support her family after Daniels death. On July 17, 1972, she married Bernard C. Hunker. She moved to Clovis and worked with Bernard at his Abstract and Title business. He preceded her in death in 1994.

Helen is survived by her children, Daniel Maher of Manhattan Beach, California, Dean Maher of Huntington Beach, California, Thomas Maher of Calabasas Hills, California, Francis Maher and Mary Jo Maher both of Hawthorne, California, Cheryl Maher of Clovis, Denise Zendel of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Michelle Reyna of Las Cruces, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by both husbands; one son, Barry Maher; three brothers, William Barry, Gannon Barry Jean Barry and two sisters, Elizabeth OCallahanBarry and Rita Mulholland.

A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2009, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
