Hershel Finley was born in Melbourne, Arkansas on June 14, 1912. He was 95 years of age. He was raised in the Amarillo, Texas area and was in the dry cleaning business for several years. On September 21, 1941, he married Mildred Moore in Clovis. Shortly after their marriage he started working for the Southern Pacific Railroad making his runs from Tucumcari to El Paso as an engineer. He held that job for 35 years and retired in 1976. They moved to Canyon, Texas where they lived for 24 years before moving to Clovis. Hershel has lived in the Retirement Ranch for 4 years and went to be with the Lord on Aug. 24, 2007.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mildred of the home, two daughters-Lola Stockton Charles of Clovis, New Mexico and Linda Simmons Roy of Kingsville, Texas, 4 grandchildren-Rodney Stockton, Stacy Brooks, Kevin Simmons, and Kyle Baum. He also has 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Isaac Annie Brewster Finley and 10 brothers and sisters, Hershel being the last.
Hershel was always a person who loved being around people and being able to help when needed. He was active in the church choir, Glory choir, and senior citizen activities, being president of the Canyon chapter for 2 terms. He was an active deacon in each of the churches where he served. He had been a member of First Baptist Church in Canyon and was currently a member of Central Baptist Church in Clovis. He was a 32nd degree Mason and had been a member for over 60 years.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at Steed-Todd Chapel in Clovis with Pastor Alan McAlister officiating. Burial will be 3:30 p.m. CDT at Memory Gardens in Amarillo, Texas with Rev. Gayle Bowen officiating.
Honorary casket bearers will be B. J. Hatley, L. T. Hart, Travis Denton, Bill Chapman, J. E. Williams and Wayne Burch.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Baptist Childrens Home in Portales or to the Central Baptist Church Building Fund.
