Hubert Qualls, Jr, 98, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020 at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis, New Mexico. Hubert was born on July 12, 1922 to Hubert and Eunice (White) Qualls in Curry County NM, the eldest of five children. He graduated from Ranchvale High School in 1940.
After graduating high school, Hubert joined his dad on the farm until September 9, 1942, when he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. After training at six different bases, he finally went to England and served at four bases with the Eighth and Ninth United States Air Force Command. He came home on January 6, 1946 and started farming again. He continued to farm and ranch until he semi-retired on June 14, 1995. Hubert then helped some of his friends with plowing and harvesting. He had a wood shop and spent many hours in there, always building something for his family and friends. Hubert was active in the Farm Bureau, serving both Curry County and the state of New Mexico. He and Mary did a lot of travelling and met a lot of precious friends.
Hubert met his wife, Mary Kellar, shortly after returning home to New Mexico. They were each “dragging” Main Street, which their daughters never let them live down. Hubert and Mary were married October 18, 1947. When Mary passed away, her and Hubert had been married over 57 years. They were life-long members of Ranchvale Baptist Church, where Hubert served as a deacon since March 18, 1973. They raised daughters in this church, served in many areas, and taught by their own example to have a servant’s heart. They were members until their deaths.
Hubert is survived by his daughters, Ruth and Jimmy Schell of Grady NM, and Beth and David Hovey of Clovis NM; stepchildren; Marilynn (JP) Kanierim, Butch (Carol) Lynn, his grandchildren, DeWayne and Jeffrey Hovey, Lashana Painter, Jaimie Booth, Quentin and Brian Wood; sister-in-law, Mary Faye Qualls; seven great-grandchildren; and five great great-grandchildren.
Hubert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; one brother, Gilbert Qualls, and two sisters, Norma Qualls, and Sybil Qualls Smith; his son Don Lee Qualls; and grandson Kyle Dewayne Wood.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 25, 2021 at Ranchvale Baptist Church at 10:00 am. This will be a joint service with his sister Doris Marie Qualls Bailey, who passed away January 18, 2021. Several of their family members and friends will be conducting the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Mexico Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 629, Portales NM 88130.
