Jake Taylor

Jake Burkett Taylor passed from this life on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at the age of 69 years after a lengthy illness.

He was born in New Boston, Texas on January 17, 1942 to Viv and Wynona Taylor.

He was married to Catherine Lucille Luci Taylor in Portales, New Mexico on March 25, 1964.

He graduated from Eastern New Mexico University with a Bachelors Degree in 1965 and a Masters Degree in 1971. He later received a Dr. of Ministry Degree from Luther Rice Seminary. He also took additional classes at Liberty University.

He served as a Church of Christ minister in Floyd, New Mexico Lewistown, Montana Missoula, Montana Ogden, Utah and Dora, New Mexico. Then he worked at the New Mexico Christian Childrens Home as a family counselor. After he retired, he continued to serve as a family counselor in private practice. He was a dedicated Christian who was always ready to help people. He served as an Elder at the Church of Christ in Portales for 30 years.

He was an avid reader and continued studying and filling in as a minister at church. He was known for his spiritual insight and great sense of humor. He loved his children and grandchildren. He made sure the grandchildren went to Camp Blue Haven every summer and he had the privilege of baptizing the two older ones.

While in Montana, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping. After moving back to New Mexico, he took up golfing and enjoyed playing golf with his wife and friends.

He is survived by his children Jonathan Lea Taylor of Clovis, New Mexico, La Shawn Buddy Lawson of Roswell, New Mexico, and Shelley Michael Bridges of Texico, New Mexico. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Aaron Taylor Micah, Isaiah and Gareth Lawson and Trevor, Tyler and Kyleigh Bridges one brother, Brooks Connie Taylor of Arlington, Texas and one sister, Nona Thomson of Pecos, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by both parents.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Southside Church of Christ, 221 West 18th Street, Portales, New Mexico with Doug Hale of Lubbock, Texas, officiating and Marlin Poynor of Shallowater, Texas, assisting. Honorable mentions are the Elders, Deacons and church family at Southside Church of Christ. A special thank you goes to the Bee Hive Homes of Portales and VistaCare Hospice.
