Janice Smith

Janice Vernell Smith was born on January 14, 1951 in Portales, New Mexico to the home of Alford and Ola Mae Nixon. Janice went to be with the Lord on October 19, 2018 at the age of 67.

Janice was raised in Floyd, New Mexico, where she also graduated High school.

Janice married Alfred Smith on June 21, 1969, and they had three children, Steven, Chad, and Jaquita. Janice had many accomplishments during her lifetime, including being an awesome mom and housewife. She worked as a school cafeteria lady, and business owner with Alfred. Janice was very devoted to her church, where she was the treasurer, as well as being treasured. Janice volunteered at the Floyd senior center, and as a community supporter. Janice loved to cook for her family, as well as being a hands-on mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved being involved with every activity going on with her family. Janice was very involved with the Floyd Baptist Church, and loved doing anything she was asked to help with in her community. She loved to travel, especially fishing and camping with her brothers and sisters. She also loved to travel to the mountains to see the leaves change colors every year. Janice was the rock of her family and was loved by so many.

Janice is preceded in death by her father, Alford; mother, Ola Mae; her brother, Herschell Nixon; and nephews, Kris Nixon and Austin Hall.

Janice is survived by her loving husband, Alfred Smith of 49 years; her sons, Steven (Michelle) Smith of Granbury, Texas, Chad (Crystal) Smith of Granbury, Texas; daughter, Jaquita (Chris) Smith of Elida, New Mexico; sister, Barbara (Ronnie) Shirley of Portales, New Mexico; brother, Harold (Georgene) Nixon of Floyd, New Mexico; and sister-in-law, Nita Nixon of Portales, New Mexico. Janice has eight grandchildren, Michael, Emileigh, Crysten, Caleb, Chance, Clayton, Aimee, and Hadley. She has three great-grandchildren, Peighton, Mellodie, and Chyler. Janice has many nieces and nephews.

Services are Monday, October 22, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Floyd Baptist Church, 314 S. Roosevelt Road Ag, Floyd, NM with Pastor Rick Wilcher officiating. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Janice's grandsons.
