She graduated from Eastern New Mexico University with her master's in education. She then worked for 32 years as an educator, where she taught her love language, Math, in Farwell Texas. Her brother (Jim) James Balfanz (Helen) and sister-in-law Jane Balfanz. To many that weren't her biological children, she was "Mama Jo" and she treated all of her "bonus kids" as if they were her own.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ian Casey, Greg Balfanz, Chris Nolan, Eric Bland, Kelly Gomez, and Brian Foster.
