Joe. W. Jones passed away Sunday, April 1, 2007 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock after a brief illness.
Joe was born November 19, 1922 in Coryell County, Texas. He graduated from Evant High School and attended Tarleton State College on a basketball scholarship. He joined the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he attended Texas AM University, where he graduated in 1948. He worked as assistant county agent for Lubbock County from 1948 until 1950, when he moved to Farwell. He served as county agent for Parmer County from 1950 until 1961 during which time he helped many producers locate their first irrigation well. He joined Security State Bank in 1961 where he worked for 44 years before retiring in 2006.
Joe was a founding member of the Texico-Farwell Rotary Club and a long time member of the Farwell Chamber of Commerce. He was a Paul Harris Fellow, and was selected Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1983. He also served as chairman of the Texico-Farwell Youth Commission.
He married Mary Irene Shanks on June 25, 1955 at West Camp.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Jim B. and Flora Jones, and a brother, Bruce Jones. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Irene; sister Eva Edwards and brother-in-shy;law L.Z. Edwards of Gatesville, Texas; two sons, Russ of Canadian; Brad and wife Ellen of Euless, Texas; granddaughters Lauren and Amy; and 5 nieces and nephews.
Memorials are suggested to Hamlin Memorial United Methodist Church, Farwell, Texas or Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo, Texas 79174.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. CDT Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at Hamlin Memorial United Methodist Church in Farwell, Texas with Rev. Scott Spitsberg officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Terrace Memorial Cemetery in Farwell.
