John William Matelski, Jr., age 45, of Clovis, died on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Lake of the Ozarks near Montreal, Missouri. He was born on July 28, 1965, in Chicago, Illinois, to John W. and Carol Shriner Matelski.
John graduated from Whiting High School in Whiting, Indiana, and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served a year in Korea, then in Dessert Storm, the Gulf War and Iraqi Freedom where he received the Bronze Star Medal. He was part of the Heavy Equipment Dirt Boys. After 20 years of service, John retired as a Master Sergeant at Cannon Air Force Base. He married Cecelia Birkner on July 9, 1986 in Chicago, and served six years TDY. He was a member of VFW 3280 in Clovis, loved to go fishing, spending time with his family, watching NASCAR, and being a part of the Pool League at the VFW. John was currently working for the Army Corp. of Engineers at CAFB as the Construction Quality Assurance Representative.
He is survived by his wife, Cecelia daughter, Amanda Matelski of Stephenville, Texas son, Matthew Matelski of Clovis three sisters and his nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 21 at SteedTodd Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m., Friday, July 22, 2011, at SteedTodd Chapel.
