John Urban

John Charles Urban, 71, of Clovis, New Mexico died Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis. He was born April 26, 1937, in De Moines, Iowa to Karl Maytie Evans Urban.

He graduated from Urbandale High School in DesMoines, Iowa and attended Drake University. He moved to Clovis in 1957 and went to work for KICA TV Radio Station in the production of ads, news and weather. He then joined the New York Life Insurance Company in 1957. John was the voice of the Wildcat Band since 1958 until he became too ill just last week. He married Mary Nell McCullough July 23, 1960 in Clovis, New Mexico. John was well known for his rendition of the National Anthem at the Clovis Wildcat football games and had been the voice of the Clovis Community Band since its inception. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Clovis Noon Day Kiwanis Club.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Nell Urban of the home in Clovis; 2 sons, Kenny Urban, and wife Janell and children James, Heather Jeremy of Clovis and Johnny Urban and wife Charissa and children, Simeon, Lisel, Jude, Hope Ava of Tulsa, Oklahoma and son-in-law, Carlos Cobo and children Christi and Camille of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Charlotte Cobo.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 6, 2008 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Harry Riser officiating.

Honorary casket bearers will Kent Carruthers, Chris Bryant, Bill Myers, Larry Glenn, Mathew Glen, Dan McCullough, Lynell Skarda, Jon Pressley, Jerry Don Dorough, Don Bonner, Dwayne Carter, Matt Carter, Mike Walker and Gene Walker; Clovis Band Directors, Karl Powell, Brandon Boerio, Ty Frederick, Kelly Morrison, Travis Pruitt, Jim Barnard, Gordon Hart, Charles Faulkner, Bill Allred, Keith Sacane and Dustin Sifert; the Community Band Members and the Clovis Noon Day Kiwanis Club.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Band Camp Scholarship in care of Clovis High School or to First United Methodist Church.
