Laura Ellen Cottle West, age 80, passed away Monday, March 2, 2009 at the Beehive Home in Clovis, New Mexico after a lengthy illness.
Laura was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma on March 27, 1928 to Lorenzo Warren Lon Cottle and Laura Lee Book Cottle. She graduated from Shawnee High School and attended Oklahoma University where she met and married Bob Greggs. She received her bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Central State College, Edmond, OK in 1962, and moved to Clovis, New Mexico where her brother, Warren Cottle, lived and began teaching art at Marshall Junior High School. During these early years in the Clovis community, Laura became well known as an artist and showed her work in various art exhibits. Laura worked on her Masters from Highland University during the 1960's, and she became known statewide for her artistic talent with one of her paintings still hanging in the State Capitol. When Yucca Junior High School was opened in 1968, Laura became its art teacher and remained there, retiring in 1984. In 1972, Laura met Ted West, and they were married on June 2, 1972. Laura enjoyed her grandchildren, pets, painting, flower gardening, and country living with her beloved husband, Ted, of 25 years. Laura was a member of the Clovis Advent Christian Church, Alpha Gamma Delta, and Daughters of the American Revolution.
Laura was preceded in death by her husband, Ted West; her parents; her infant son, Bobby; one brother, Warren Cottle; and four sisters, Velma Cottle Musick, Matilda Arlisle Tot Cottle Johnson Boles, Lee Marie Cottle High, and Erma May Cottle.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Linda Greggs of Orlando, FL; her daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Don Clifton of Clovis, MM; two step-daughters, Jennifer West of Albuquerque, NM, and Deborah Worley of Littleton, CO; four grandchildren, Becky McMullan, Jake Abernathy, Mukita Rodriguez, and Cash Clifton; four step-grandchildren, Daysa Dowdy, Shalley Dowdy, Shanda Stewart, and Aaron Worley; six great-grandchildren; her close friend, Jean Klebold; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family and final viewing will be held at the Advent Christian Church on Thursday from 2:00 pm until service time. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm with the Reverend Sam Walsh officiating. Burial will follow at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Steven Blakeley, Don Clifton, W.T. Klebold, Austin McMullan, Tom McMullan, and Humberto Pillado. Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of the Advent Christian Church, Dr. Greg Willmon, Wilburn Brooks, and Bill Pringle.
