Laverne Robert Schwartz, age 78, beloved Husband, Dad, and Grandpa, was called to his eternal resting place on May 28, 2020. He entered this world on April 12, 1942 in Gothenburg, Nebraska to the home of Louis Robert Schwartz and Mary Cornelia Kaiser Schwartz. Laverne entered the United States Air Force in August of 1961. He was stationed at Cannon Air Force Base during the fall of 1963 when he met Frances Harriman in Portales, New Mexico. They were married at the University Drive Church of Christ in Portales on March 15, 1964. Laverne and Frances had four children and resided in Clovis, New Mexico from 1971 until present.
Laverne graduated from Eastern New Mexico University with an associate degree in Business. He worked at PNM Gas Company for over 25 years and was in the Civil Engineering Department at Cannon Air Force Base until his second retirement. He loved fishing, hunting, and camping with his family. He worked around his house and his children's homes making needed repairs, remodels and even planting and tending to gardens. He shared tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, peppers, and many other bountiful harvests each year with family and friends.
Laverne was baptized into the Lord’s Church in 1964 and lived a life of service. He was dedicated to leadership in the Boy Scouts of America as he helped his son and grandsons achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. He served in the Optimist Club, he helped at the Lighthouse Mission and continually looked for work that needed to be done at W. 21st Street Church of Christ and in the homes of anyone in need. Laverne could fix just about anything and never backed down from a challenge. He was a Wildcat Band and Wildcat Football fan and would attend anything involving his children or grandchildren. Laverne was a talented artist, creating silver and turquoise jewelry, blown glass, and painted rocks. It was his passion to create uniquely personalized pieces for each child, grandchild, or his beloved wife.
Laverne is preceded in death by his father, Louis Robert Schwartz, his mother, Mary Cornelia Kaiser Schwartz, and his beloved sister Evonne Brown. Laverne is survived by his wife Frances of the home, their four children Susan (Steve) Credle, Janet (Rodney) Mason, Douglas (Kellie) Schwartz, Carol Davis and eleven grandchildren, Ryan (Kayci) Credle, Brannon Credle, Madison Credle, Mackenzie Credle, Rodney L Mason Jr., Kelsie (Isaiah) Rodriquez, Kyle (Jaclyn) Schwartz, Cassidy Schwartz, Caden Schwartz, Avonte Bumgardner, Kyle Davis and seven great-grandchildren, Peyton Credle, Parker Credle, Keyon Mason, Rodney L Mason III, Shae Mason, Kendrick Rodriguez, Karston Rodriguez, and his brother-in-law Ken Brown.
A viewing will be held at Steed Todd Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 2nd from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. A tribute will be held at W. 21st Street Church of Christ at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2020. Livestream viewing will be made available at www.21stcoc.com. Graveside services immediately following at the Texico, New Mexico Cemetery. Pall Bearers will be Ryan Credle, Brannon Credle, Kyle Schwartz, Caden Schwartz, Kyle Davis, and Isaiah Rodriguez. Memorial contributions may be made in Laverne's honor to W. 21st Street Church of Christ, 1720 W. 21st Street, Clovis, NM 88101. The family of Laverne Schwartz wishes to extend our sincere thanks to everyone for all the prayers, cards, and phone calls while Laverne was in the hospital.
