Lee Etta Hamlett, 96, went home to be with her Lord, Jesus Christ on October 26, 2008, a mere 3 weeks after reaffirming her faith in the Lord and being baptized.
She was born in Coppell, Texas June 2, 1912 to George Washington and Nora Lee Moore Stringfellow. After the death of her father she came to New Mexico by train with her mother and one brother. Her mother married J. B. Howell in Amarillo, Texas, from there they traveled by wagon to her step-father's homestead between Forrest and Grady, to this union her sister Margaret was born. He had built onto his home preparing for his new family, even at 2 12 yrs old Lee Etta remembered the new lumber he had used. Her and her brother rode their horse 3 miles to school to Plano, NM until it was consolidated with Plain, NM. Mr. Davis converted his feed truck into the first school bus in the area. Later all the schools were united when the new Forrest School was built. Lee Etta, her brother and sister completed their education at Forrest, while attending she excelled at basketball and track receiving several awards.
On August 29, 1931, she married Harvey Lamar Skeet Hamlett in Clovis, NM. They had 4 daughters, Carmaleta, Betty Louise, Lee Nora and Audna Jean, and 1 son Harvey Lee, they also lovingly raised 1 grandson Harvey Lucky Magden as their own.
She was preceded in death by her father George Stringfellow, her mother and step-father J.B. and Nora Howell, her husband Harvey Lamar Skeet Hamlett, in 1979, two daughters Carmaleta Hamlett, infant in 1932 and Betty Leberfinger in 2007, her sister Margaret Howell Lethgo in 2008, three brothers Ben in 1955, Clarence in 1957, Burl in 1986, one half brother James Dale Howell, one son-in-law Tim Neumann in 2007, two grandsons Benny Henry and Neko Hamlett, one niece and two nephews.
She is survived by her son Harvey Lee Judy Hamlett, her grandson Lucky Magden, two daughters Lee Nora Hamlett and Audna Neumann and 1 son-in-law Donald Leberfinger. She is also survived by a grandson Michael Hamlett and 4 grand-daughters, 12 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren, 3 nephews and one niece and many close extended family members.
Lee Etta was known for her well-kept beautiful flower garden that she tended to and enjoyed until her last day. She enjoyed cooking and baking, along with her crocheting. She enjoyed family gatherings and telling stories and sharing pictures of her past to the younger family members. She always enjoyed visiting with school chums, a name she used for her classmates, and the many friends she met along the memorable journey of her life. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 30, 2008 at Steed-Todd Chapel with Rev. Joel Horne officiating. Burial will follow at Mission Garden of Memories.
Pallbearers will be Calvin White, Don Cross, Jerry White, George Romero, Sam Montoya, George Davis, Dewayne Freeman and Orville Turner.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 1015, Clovis, NM 88102, for remodeling of the kitchen, or to the Baptist Childrens Home, P. O. Box 629, Portales, NM 88130.
