Lee Charlie Roach was born November 27, 1918 at Field, NM. He passed away at the Farwell Convalescent Center on January 20, 2011 at the age of 92. He was the oldest of five children born to Homer E. Roach and Ina Twilla Roach. Upon graduating high school in 1939 Lee was drafted into the US Army 200th Coast Artillery, a New Mexico National Guard unit. Following training Lee arrived on the Philippine Islands on the 26th of September 1941. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor the Japanese took control of the Philippines. Lees unit was surrendered to the Japanese by General King and General Wainwright. After surviving the Bataan Death March, he remained a Prisoner of War for three and one half years in Japanese prison camps. Following the armistice he returned to the United States and was released from service on March 29, 1946.
Shortly after returning to the United States Lee married Una Colie Edmonston on May 12, 1946. They enjoyed almost 65 years of marriage together. For 26 years Lee worked in the heating shop in the Civil Engineer division at Cannon Air Force Base and retired in April of 1978. Upon retirement Lee and Colie spent many years traveling with the Good Sams Camper Club visiting various places from North Carolina to Canada.
Survivors include his wife Una Roach of Clovis two sons, Darryl Roach of Clovis, Gerryl, and Deanna Roach of Melrose, four grandchildren and ten greatgrandchildren, two brothers Robert of Hobbs and Odis of Clovis. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, his sister Ruth and brother Roy.
Services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Clovis at 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 24, 2011 with Pastor Eric Fields, officiating and assisted by Lees grandson Wesley Roach. Pallbearers include Ernest Edmonston, Lance Roach, Nathan Richardson, Gary Mascaro, Odis Roach, Carrol Brand, Harold Norton, and Audie Roach. All of Lees friends and the Mens Bible Class at First Baptist Church have been named as Honorary Pallbearers. Burial with military honors will follow at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis.
