Lee Scott

Lee James Scott, Sam to all his family and friends, was born to Nathan Summers and Anna Lee Scott on July 24, 1924 at Grier, NM. They moved to New Mexico just a few months before he was born, arriving by covered wagon from Oklahoma. They later moved to St. Vrain where Sam spent his childhood and later raised his own family on the Scott Ranch. After graduating from Melrose High School in Melrose, NM, he joined the Navy as a SeaBee attached to the 1st Marine division in the South Pacific during WWII. Returning from overseas, he started his career as Assistant Chief at the Cannon Air Force Base Fire Department Crash and Rescue Unit, retiring after 26 years of service. Sam met the love of his life at the Silver Grill restaurant in Clovis. He married Juanita Geneva Wilson on December 20, 1948, and to this union was born 6 children. Sam was an active member of the St. Vrain, Melrose, Clovis and Logan communities. He loved working with the Boy Scouts and being a Little League coach. He was a Reserve Game Warden, deputy sheriff, rancher and grain elevator worker. He was a Charter member of the American Legion 77 of Logan, NM, as their Service Officer, presenting the American Flag at hundreds of funerals, not only in NM, but in several states. It was with great pride that he did this since 1944. He was a member of VFW Post 3015 Clovis, NM, for 65 years, Melrose Rotary Club of Melrose and the Veterans Affairs Volunteer Service Representative for Amarillo, Texas, for the past 20 years. He helped start the VA Clinic in Clovis and was a volunteer there for 15 years. Sam loved people and his quick wit and storytelling always brought laughter to all who would listen. He was instrumental in saving the lives of hundreds of civilians and servicemen as reflected by the many citations issued to him during his career with the fire department.

Sam is survived by three children Charlotte Lynn ScottEstes of Burleson, Texas husband, Glen Nathan Samuel Scott of St. Vrain, New Mexico and Lonnie James Scott of Gunter, Texas wife, Amy Bean. He is survived by a sister, Bobbie Landess of Clovis, New Mexico and his special love, Bea Gwaltney of Logan, New Mexico. His is also survived by his many grandchildren, Staff Sergeant Scott Fields, of Fort Knox, Kentucky, Jodi Secret of Roswell, NM Lonee Lynn Downey of St. Vrain, New Mexico, and Sammy Lawrence of Clovis, New Mexico Adrienne Lee Foote of Bismarck, ND and Cody Wayne Foote of New Town, ND Summer Lee Scott of Sugar Hill, GA Michael Scott of Portales, NM Tyson Scott and Tyler Scott of Gunter, TX. He is also survived by 11 Great Grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Scott, daughters, Ellen Lawrence and Peggy Scott, one son, and, a brother, Lonzo Scott.

Sam went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 14, 2012 and was surrounded by his family at the Community Hospice House of Texas in Burleson, Texas.

Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, January 21, 2012 with Glen Estes officiating at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis, New Mexico.

The family of Sam will receive visitors at 1208 E. 21st Street, Clovis, New Mexico.
