Leon Dick

June 30, 1921 — June 14, 2013

Leon Rolan Dick was born on June 30, 1921 in Clovis to Rufus E. and Tempest Flora Woodward Dick. He went to be with the Lord on June 14, 2013 in Clovis, New Mexico. He attended area schools and graduated from Portales High School in 1939.

He married Ruth Irene Hanna on November 27, 1942 in San Jose, California. They met in Chicago while Leon was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Air Station for Basic Training.

Leon, a gifted carpenter, built the house that Ruth and he lived in for almost 60 years, even building his own 21 foot boat in the garage, retired as a construction superintendent after supervising the construction and remodeling of schools, courthouses, hospitals, college campus buildings and government buildings across southeastern New Mexico. He served in the US Navy during World War II, stationed on Guadalcanal.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Tempest, his brother, R.E., a great grandson, Brendyn Dick, nephew Terry Dick, several aunts and uncles and cousins.

Leon is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ruth, sons, Richard and his wife Susan of Tucson, Arizona, Tom and his wife Sandra of Roswell, Jeff Scott and his wife Carol of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Stephen Dick of Pueblo, Colorado. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Nancy Welliver of Maryland, Bob Dick and wife Marissa of Cleveland, Ohio, Leslie Dick and Michael Dick, both of Las Cruces, Jeremy Dick of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Erin Wittkowski and her husband Paul of Marion, Iowa and Becky Frerichs and her husband Nick of Cedar Falls, Iowa, 9 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. Leon is also survived by nephews, Donald Dick and Andy Mowery, and his niece and Goddaughter, Amy Mowery. Over time Leon became a Grandfather to Lance, Rhett and Sean Donald and an Uncle to Debby Sukajda, Tom and Jim Mowery. He is also survived by his sistersinlaw Elaine Arnold and Kathy Mowery and her husband Jim all of Chicago and several cousins.

Leon was a member of the Clovis Masonic Lodge 40 and the Shriners for over 40 years until his death.

The family would like to thank Connie and Russ Backoff for all the friendship they have shown our parents over the years. We also want to thank the Staff of The Retirement Ranch for the care they provided Leon in the last 3 years.

Closed Casket Funeral Service to be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at 2:00pm at SteedTodd Funeral Home Chapel, 800 East Manana Boulevard Clovis, New Mexico 88101. Officiating will be Scott Seymour. The family will arrive at the funeral home prior to the service on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at 1:00pm to receive guests.

Honorary Pallbearers are Gene Harvey and Frank Hine.

Donations can be made to the March of Dimes supporting his greatgranddaughter, Nora Wittkowski.
