Leonard Horton

May 27, 1919 — March 3, 2018

Leonard Durwood Horton of Clovis, NM passed away on March 3, 2018 in Farwell, TX. Visitation will be from 10am until 3pm on Friday March 23rd at Steed-Todd Funeral Home in Clovis, NM. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Saturday March 24th at Central Baptist Church with Michael Kirby officiating. Burial will follow at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home.
Leonard was born in Whitewright, TX to William Martin Horton and Lela Dorothy Harris Horton on May 27, 1919. Leonard was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Navy as a Gunners Mate 1st Class from December 8, 1941 to November 23, 1945. He was awarded a Medal of Honor and a Siege of Leningrad Medal from the Soviet Union for bravery as a result of his participation in the Murmansk Run in which Allied convoys delivered desperately needed war supplies to the Soviet Union during the German invasion of Russia. Leonard returned to his employment with the Santa Fe Railroad after the war as a locomotive engineer from 1945 until his retirement in 1986.
He was an excellent carpenter, loved remodeling and, with his sons, built a family cabin in Ruidoso, NM. His hobbies included flying his Super Mooney airplane, golf, hunting and fishing. His love for family, animals and nature will always be remembered.
He is preceded in death by the love of his life, wife Cleo Arlene (Billye) Horton, wife Lorraine Stovall Horton, brother Dorman (Don) Horton, son Steve Horton and step-son Dan Stovall. He is survived by his son Stan Horton, daughter-in-law Emily Hartger Horton, grandchildren Alex, Jeremy and Jeff Horton, great-grandchildren Haley and Kaylen Horton, and step-sons Dean, Doug, and Darrell Stovall.
The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Farwell Care and Rehabilitation Center for the excellent care and love they gave Leonard.
