Lewis Gilbert, 59, went home to be with the Lord on September 29, 2008 after a fight with cancer. Lewis was born on Columbus Day, October 12, 1948 in Clovis, New Mexico to Melvin and Edna Gilbert. Lewis never got far away from Clovis or the home place on the Pleasant Hill highway. He loved the land and farming and always seeing the excitement of wheat and maize harvest. He had been a farmer all his life and in the trucking business. Lewis also loved children and was a great uncle to his nieces and nephews.
Lewis is survived by his sisters, Ann Savory, Lynn Poole, Janet Daniels and a brother, Jim Gilbert. He also leaves behind in loving memory nieces, including Krista Vernon Jones Karisa, Justin and Robin, who helped care for him during his illness, as well as nephews, cousins and an aunt. Karissa was with Lewis when he went home to be with the Lord.
Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, his father, in 1975 and his beloved mother, Edna, in April, 2008 whom he took care of in her later years.
Lewis graduated from CHS and was a member of FFA. He learned to drive a John Deere tractor and pickup on the farm at about eight. He worked for the Starbuck family for many years and they were also like family to Lewis. Lewis was a very unique in
idual and was dearly loved by his family and friends. He will be missed.
Memorial services are still pending. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Christian Church or the American Cancer Society.
