Lugardita Ortiz

October 26, 1911 — February 26, 2008

Luga Madrid Ortiz, age 96, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis, NM after a lengthy illness.

Lugardita was born in San Ignacio, NM to Teodoro Madrid and Emilia Sena. She was a home maker and helped in taking care of her parents and siblings. As a young woman Luga learned to play the accordion and helped her two brothers Margarito and Benito play violin and guitar in back country dances. She also helped milk cows, cook and feed ranch hands. She loved to feed milk, to young sheep just born.

She met Antonio Ortiz, a sheep herder, from Dilia in one of their dances, fell in love, married and decided to populate the world. They had three sons. After moving to Dilia where her two boys Manuel and Eduardo were raised, she loved to crochet many items to help in household expenses. Most of them she gave away. The family moved to Clovis where her third son Trinidad was born. She picked cotton for awhile in Texas. She then hired out at the Clovis Hotel as cook and helper. The first things she bought was a washing machine, dryer, and pedal sewing machine, which she still used. Then she hired out at the El Monterey Restaurant as part time cook and helper.

She lived through the depression and seventeen presidential administrations and lived through two world wars, Korean, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and many other small conflicts.

She was preceded in death by her husband Antonio Ortiz.

Survivors include her sister, Alvina Martinez of San Ignacio, NM; Sons, Manuel Antonio Ortiz and wife Rebecca Rodriguez Ortiz of Barstow, CA, Eduardo Conrado Ortiz and wife Helen Anaya Ortiz of Clovis, NM, and Trinidad Gilberto Ortiz of Clovis, NM. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, twenty six great grand children, and one great-great grand child.
