During the early morning of January 2, 2010, Marilyn Jo Carter peacefully passed away at her home in Clovis, New Mexico.
Born April 7, 1947, Marilyn grew up across the Texas Panhandle and was the daughter of Dalton and Louise May. The difficult farm life inspired Marilyn to pursue a college education after graduating from Estelline High School in 1965. She enrolled in Eastern New Mexico University and majored in Home Economics Education. While attending, she met her future husband, Glenn. She received both bachelors and masters degrees in education from ENMU.
Marilyn went on to become a fixture in the Home Economics education field and taught for over three decades at Yucca Junior High, Clovis High School, and Dimmit High School. As an educator, she went above and beyond the textbook. Marilyn was a decorated advisor of a student organization, FCCLA formerly FHAHERO, through which she helped her students realize their full potential. She inspired countless students, many of which went on to pursue the same teaching field, including her two daughters.
An avid Red Hatter, Marilyn enjoyed a variety of social events. Spending time with friends and family, golfing, traveling, and even the occasional shenaniganMarilyn enjoyed life to the fullest
Marilyns battle with cancer spanned ten years. Through traditional chemotherapies, radiations, and clinical trials Marilyn never gave up. Through her strength, we find strength.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Edward Carter her father Dalton May and her sisterinlaw JoAnn Bernhardt.
She is survived by her children, son James Carter and his wife Shawna of Clovis daughter Debbie Stenstrom of Portales daughter Melissa Weber and her husband Jason of Albuquerque and son William Carter and his wife Julie of Albuquerque.
In addition, she is survived by her grandchildren Kirk Lebow and his wife Melissa, Sydney Stenstrom, Bradley Carter, Deven Weber, Kylie Stenstrom, Savannah Weber, and Mason Carter. She is also survived by her mother, Louise May of Memphis, Texas brother David May and wife Donna of Brenham, Texas sister Jeanette Mitchell and husband Royce of San Angelo, Texas and brother Donald May and wife Marsha of Flowermound, Texas.
Services will be held Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 2:00 pm at Central Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens.
