Mary McMullen, 84, loving wife, mother, and sister passed away on September 13, 2008 in Clovis after a long and valiant battle against cancer. Mary was born in Delhi, Oklahoma on November 29, 1923.
Marys family moved to the Fields area in 1936; and she married J. D. Newman in 1942. She graduated from Fields High School in 1943. . Mary and J. D. began a very successful life together as they farmed and raised cattle in the Melrose area, and also ran a Texaco station in Melrose while raising three children Laraine, Randy, and Jerry. Mary and J. D. were members of the 1st Baptist Church, where she worked as Church Secretary for many years. Later, she was employed by the Melrose School system and the Melrose Dry Cleaners during the late 1950s and 1960s. She was also employed by the 1st National Bank of Melrose. Later, she worked at Pennys Department Store in Clovis and she retired as the post master at St. Vrain after many years service. During her later years, she made many additional friends from the Forest and Fields area through her duties at the St. Vrain post office. During her childrens school years, Mary and J. D. were very active participants in all Melrose Public Schools activities. All three children graduated from Eastern New Mexico University, and Mary and J. D. continued their participation in their childrens endeavors. Mary was widowed in 1973 and she married Freddie Fred McMullen in May, 1988. Fred retired from K. Barnett and sons. After many years residency in Melrose, Mary and Fred moved to Clovis in 2006. Mary and Fred had 20 very happy years together.
Mary is survived by her husband, Freddie R. McMullen of Clovis and her children, Jerry Don Newman of Columbia, South Carolina Wife Marsha, daughters Kelly Umhoefer, and Taylor Gause; Randall Randy Newman of Tucson, Arizona; daughter Laraine Scott, Albuquerque husband Hanson, sons Craig and Randy; sisters Estell Horton of Dayton, Texas; and Estellene Norton of Teague, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Lillie Paddick and her first husband, J. D. Newman; also by her brothers Floyd and W. L. Dub Paddick.
Services will be Monday, September 15, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Steed-Todd Chapel with Rev. Jackie Rumbough officiating. Burial will follow at the Melrose Cemetery in Melrose, New Mexico.
