Milburn Ellis Bolin (Meb) 85, passed away on June 10, 2016, in Portales, New Mexico.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00, Saturday, June 25, 2016 at Steed-Todd Funeral Home.
Milburn Ellis Bolin (Meb) was born on a share-cropping farm near Parker, Texas, to Jesse Franklin Bolin and Ethel Grace Howington Bolin, on May 25, 1931. He had two older siblings: Anna Belle Bolin Warren and Jesse Franklin Bolin Jr. His father became a Southern Baptist Minister.
He graduated from Vega, Texas High School. At the University of Texas in Austin, he earned both his bachelors and masters in Economics. He married Ruth Jacobson, of Adrian, Texas, in June of 1953. They had five children: Janet Gail, Charles Lynn, Tonia Sue Beckler, Tana Kay Woods, and Daniel Norman. He married Betty Ivalise Jimenez in Ponce, Puerto Rico on July 23, 1982. They had William Sanford and Jessica Marie.
He taught economics at the University of Texas, Central State College in Edmond, Oklahoma, Universidad Catolica in Puerto Rico, and at Bristol College in Bristol, England. Ultimately, he settled into Portales, New Mexico and taught at Eastern New Mexico University for 28 years. He gave lectures in London, England, and in Alicante, Spain.
Becoming disaffected with his fundamentalist background at about twelve years of age, he became a secular humanist, always seeking to solve social problems and further the life process. While teaching at ENMU, he became an activist in the Democratic Party. He was a delegate from New Mexico to the Democratic Convention in Chicago in 1968, and he represented NM on the National Democratic Platform Committee in Washington, D.C. in 1972. He represented Roosevelt County at numerous state Democratic conventions.
