Mildred Norris died August 29, 2008, at the age of 98 12. She was born to Fred and Maggie Holden in Van Buren, AR, in 1909. BRMildred taught in a one-room school house. Some of her students still sing her praises as their favorite teacher. Her teaching career ended when she eloped with Steve Norris in 1934. They were married for 68 12 years till his death in 2002. BR The couple began Norris Electric in the early 40's. They were active in the First Methodist Church, Eastern Star and several travel clubs. She was involved in each of her four children's church, school, Rainbow and scouting activities. BR In 1975, Mildred and Steve retired and built a cabin on her family farm near Cecil, AR. They enjoyed many happy summers there with Steve on his bulldozer, and Mildred cooking from her garden of mystery seeds. Their pioneering feats will long be appreciated by their friends and family. BR Mildred was locally famous for her cooking, especially those potato rolls. She loved parties and was planning a dance for her 100th. Her family and friends will miss her impromptu luncheons and pot lucks. BR She is survived by two sons, Robert and Barbara Norris, Curtis and Darla Norris; daughter-in-law, Velma Norris, and one daughter and husband, Phyllis and Jerry Dorough. She leaves a legacy of 10 grandchildren, Michael Norris, Karen Shone, Allen Norris, Lisa McCasland, Layne Norris, Marti Mayfield, Jim Dorough, Richard Dorough, Chad Norris and Cory Norris, and 18 great-grandchildren. She also leaves an extended family of nieces, nephews and longtime family friends. BR Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Tuesday, September 2, at 10:00 a.m. Internment will follow at Lawn Haven Cemetery. BR Her seven grandsons will serve as pallbearers. BR In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church or charity of your choice. BR Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home, Clovis, NM.
