Modine WhitingtonParker passed away July 7, 2012 at her home in Clovis,
NM.
She was born July 11, 1917 in Hot Springs, Arkansas to O.M. and Mary
Harrison.
At the age of 12 she made the most important decision of her life by
accepting Jesus Christ as not only her Savior but as the Lord of her life.
Modine graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1935. She attended
Ouachita Baptist University on a music scholarship for two years. In 1936
she married Marsh Whitington. They had two children, Ann Harry.
As the wife of an Army officer she lived in several states. The family
moved to Clovis NM in 1955 for her husband Marsh to put in the Cable TV
System. Modine received a BA and MA from Eastern New Mexico University,
majoring in Elementary Education and Specialized Reading. She started
teaching in Clovis Schools in January l957 at James Bickley School as a
first grade teacher, retiring in 1984. Modine was voted into NEANew
Mexico Southeast Region Hall of Fame in 1992.
Husband, Marsh, died in 1979. In 1984 she married Dr. Carl A. Parker,
Emeritus Professor, Eastern New Mexico University. Carl died in 1996.
In retirement Modine did what she loved best reading and traveling. She
traveled to 49 of the 50 states and to 35 countries.
She was a member of Central Baptist Church, Charlies Angels Sunday School
Class, Delta Kappa Gamma, New Mexico Educational retirees, Curry Co.
Educational retirees, a life time member of NEA, a former Sunday School
teacher, Chamber of Commerce greeter, worker for American Heart Assoc.,
Cripple Children, March of Dimes, Daughters of the Nile, ENM Antique Car
Club, Friends of ENMU, ENMU Wives Womens Club, and received the New
Mexico Women in History award from Gov. Bruce King.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands Marsh Carl, and
her brothers Floyd Gilford Harrison, nieces Norma Jean Housley Shirley
White, and nephew Richard Harrison all of Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann Whitington Liethen of Clovis a son
Harry Whitington wife Judy, Houston, TX nieces Martha Poe Hickerson
Jane Allen McCombe, Hot Springs Arkansas Cindy Warriner, Crestview
Florida Suzanne Charette, Alexander Arkansas Nephews Bill Allen, Paron,
Arkansas Albert DeMers, Little Rock, Arkansas two stepdaughters, Pat
Pam Parker and families, Pottsburro, Texas a cousin, Clinton Gillham,
Shore View, Minnesota numerous great nieces and nephews and a large
extended family.
Friends may call at SteedTodd Funeral Home. The casket will be closed at
the Funeral Service. Services will be at ll:00 a.m. on Monday July 16,
2012 at SteedTodd Chapel, 800 E. Manana Blvd., Clovis, New Mexico with
Pastor Alan McAlister officiating and Pastor Rob Hollis assisting.
Private burial will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Dr. James B. Moss, J. C. Smith, Charles Stockton, J.
E. Williams, Travis Denton, Will Cockrell, Bill Chapman, Allen Kelley, and
Ernie Paro. Honorary pallbearers are all former students whose lives she
touched.
Memorials may be given to the New Mexico Baptist Childrens Home, Box 629
Portales, NM 88130, Central Baptist Church Building Fund, 2501 N. Norris
Clovis, NM 88101 or to the charity of your choice.
