Nina Ruth Barrow died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, October 22nd. She was 77 years old.
Nina was born on September 14, 1938. She was Ralph and Stella Barrows 6th child and the last to be born on the family farm in Ranchvale. Stella finally got to go to the hospital to have her youngest son, Ben. She graduated from Ranchvale High School in 1956, where she served as the class Reporter. During her high school years, Nina was a star softball player and she was feared on the basketball court, as one of the best female basketball players in the state.
In the 60s, Nina lived near her brother in Sunnyvale, California. After almost a decade of enjoying the west coast sunshine, she moved to Long Island, New York, to be near her sister Marie. In New York, Nina worked for, and eventually retired from, Northrop Corporation one of the biggest defense contractors in the country. In 1992, she moved back to Clovis to live with and care for her mother.
Nina was a collector of many things: windup toys, turtle art, fish art, salt shakers.. She was the family historian and genealogist and spent many years gathering information about her Barrow, Shives, Hodges and Collum ancesters. She loved to go fishing with her brother Benny, his wife, Vicki, and her Aunt Christina. She enjoyed gardening and was envied by all for her blackberry patch, tomato garden and the beautiful roses lining the front of her house.
Nina was very active in the Clovis community. She was a past officer of the Order of Does, and was the Doe of the Year in 2002. She was also a past member of the Eagles Auxiliary and the Clovis Elks Lodge. She regularly attended 5th Saturday reunions at the Elks Lodge a gathering of friends from the Ranchvale community on months with a 5th Saturday.
Nina will be greatly missed by her many friends and family, and especially by her dog, Pete, who brought her so much happiness, every single day.
Nina is predeceased by her parents, Ralph and Stella Barrow, and five brothers and sisters: Burnis Barrow, John Barrow, Marie Foulkes, Leo Barrow and Benny Barrow. She is survived by her sister, Janie Kirkpatrick, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of Ninas life will be hosted by the Order of Does and her family, today, October 25th, from 35 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 218 Sycamore Street in Clovis, NM. All friends and family are invited. There will be a brief internment ceremony at Lawn Haven Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Monday, October 27th, for anyone who wishes to attend.
