Rachel Locklear Sparks, 96, passed away on November 10, 2014, in Clovis, NM.
Born February 8, 1918 at Norton, NM to Dee and Eva Brown Locklear. She had two older brothers, AT and Chester Cotton and two younger brothers Eugene Gene and Edwin. Rachel graduated from Grady High in 1936 and worked at Wheatland School until 1938 when her family moved to Ima where she taught at the school there.
She married Elvin Paul Sparks September 12, 1940. Elvin and Rachel farmed in Ima until Elvins death in November 1991. They were blessed with twins, Jerry and wife Linda, and Jeneane Sue on February 29, 1944. Rachel and Elvin started the Ima Church in 1946 with a neighborhood Bible study at the Ima schoolhouse. She remained a teacher, song leader and community prayer warrior in Ima until she moved in with her daughter in Clovis in 2003. She continued to help with bible study at Parkland Baptist until her death.
Rachel had 6 grandchildren Todd and wife Jeanne Tatum, Tedd and wife Jill Tatum, and Susan Tatum, Kyle and wife Cristi Sparks, Kim and Husband John Starling, and Cody Sparks 9 great grandchildren Amanda Walton, Elyse, Tyler, Kole and Karina Roberts Tatum, Hunter and Hayden Sparks, Kendall and Jace Starling and 3 greatgreat grandchildren Logan Benton, Stockton Tatum and Drake Walton.
She is survived by her children, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and greatgreat grandchildren. Along with numerous friends and loved ones.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband Elvin, brothers Edwin, Gene, and Cotton her soninlaw James Sonny Tatum.
Visitation will be Thursday from 8 to 8 at SteedTodd Funeral Home at 800 E Manana Blvd. Service will be held at 10: 00 am Friday November 14, at Parkland Baptist Church. Burial will be at 2:00 pm November 14, at the Ima Cemetery.
