Obit for Richard L. Dick Doran

Richard L. Dick Doran 81 passed away peacefully May 19, 2013 following a lengthy illness. His first wife, Patricia Doran, their son Richard and his wife, Lisa, were at his side.
Visitation will be from 57 pm Thursday, May 23 at Steed Todd Funeral Home, Clovis, NM. Family and friends will celebrate his life with a closed casket service at 2 pm, Friday May 24 in the chapel at Steed Todd. Pastor Keath Baskett will officiate. Casket Bearers are Richard P. Doran, Patrick Doran, Tom Rogers, Ken Gulliford, Joe Doran, Charles Doran, Jeremyiah Flesher, and Sam Lamb. Honorary Casket Bearers are all grandsons and all the staff of American National Insurance. Interment will follow at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis, NM. Mr. Doran was a lifelong Methodist.
Mr. Doran was born April 5, 1932 in Cromers, Ohio, to Walter and Virgie Mason Doran. He grew up on the family farm with his two brothers, Charles and Joe, and their three cousins, Eugene, Buster, and James. In high school, he was a track star and set many records.
After graduating from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, TX, Mr. Doran was stationed at Clovis Air Force Base now Cannon where he met and married Patricia Lamb while singing in the choir at First Methodist Church. They moved to TAC Headquarters, Langley AFB, Virginia, where Mr. Doran, a professional musician, played the flute and piccolo in the Tactical Air Command Band. While stationed in Virginia, he also played in the Norfolk, Va. Symphony and the Newport News, Va. Orchestra. Deaf in one ear, he played the piano by ear, entertaining listeners with everything from church hymns to ragtime. While in Virginia, he moonlighted selling World Book Encyclopedias and won many company awards.
After four years in the Air Force, he settled down in Clovis, NM, where he sold life insurance for American National Insurance Company. When he was younger, Mr. Doran loved to challenge his six kids to footraces in front of their home or on the country roads of Ohio. Every summer he took his family to Ohio, and those vacations are among his childrens favorite childhood memories. He loved to tinker with old cars, sometimes hauling his children around to various junkyards around eastern New Mexico.
Mr. Doran is survived by his first wife, Patricia Lamb Doran of Clovis, NM, their five surviving children Patrick and wife Janice Doran of Carey, Ohio, Laura and husband Ken Gulliford of Phoenix, AZ, Kathleen and husband Tom Rodgers of Colleyville, TX, Richard P. and wife Lisa Doran of Clovis, NM, and JoLynda and husband Alberto Rivera of Niceville, FL. He is also survived by his brother Charles and wife Mary Doran of Carey, Ohio, his brother Joe and wife Carolyn Doran of Carey, Ohio, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Virgie Doran and his son, Larry Lynn Doran.
