Richard Theodore Mendez, Jr., age 51 of Clovis, New Mexico passed away peacefully alongside his life partner Steve Westall on March 21, 2018 in Amarillo, Texas. Richard was born on June 11, 1966 in Clovis, New Mexico to the home of Richard Mendez, Sr and Marie (Selgado) Mendez.
He attended Eastern New Mexico University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education in 1988 and obtained another Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice in 1994. Richard had a soft heart for all animals and rescued many and gave them a loving home. He was a very caring person and would give the shirt off his back to anyone if needed. Last but not least, he occasionally liked to drink a Bud Light to relax and hang out.
He is preceded in death by his parents and numerous aunts and uncles.
Richard is survived by his Life Partner, Steve Westall; his brother, Nathan (Tram Vo) Mendez, of Austin, Texas; his two nieces, Alexis and Alyssa Mendez whom he loved dearly.
A rosary will be recited on Monday, March 26, 2018 at 6:00pm with Deacon Daniel Chavez in the Steed-Todd Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, 10:00am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Fr. Eli Valadez. Cremation will take place after services and a private burial will take place at a later date. Serving as Pall Bearers will be Daniel Gallegos, Nick Dominguez, Alan Weber, Carlos Rivero, Gabriel Velasquez, and Danny Rainey.
Richard's family requests that everyone attending his service to please wear bright colors to honor and celebrate Richard's life.
