Robert E. Johnson
Robert E. Johnson, 84, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on November 21, 2013.
Bob was born at home on an Easter Sunday morning March 31, 1929. He was the only son of Wesley and Lola Mae Johnson of Clovis, New Mexico. He graduated from Clovis High School in 1947 then joined the National Guard in 1948 where he proudly served his country for 32 years. He received his commission in 1956 and retired in 1980 with a commission of CW4.
In 1949 he began a year long courtship with Gerry Swearingen, marrying her on December 30, 1950, spending 63 loving years together. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Steve, Robert and Renee. In 1968 the family moved to Tucumcari, New Mexico where they finished raising their children, and bought Crossroads Western Wear. Bob was a business owner for 14 years, and during that period of time he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and served on the Lodgers Tax Board.
They liquidated the Crossroads in 1990 then moved back to Clovis to enjoy their retirement. Fully embracing the retired lifestyle, they joined Good Sams in 1984 and traveled extensively throughout the United States. They visited many of the National Parks, Alaska, Hawaii, and took a special trip to see the fall colors in the eastern states. He had several hobbies which included coin collecting, playing card games, camping, and collecting guns.
Bob served as an elder 17 years with the 21st Street church of Christ, from 1993 to 2010. He was active in many church activities and he and Gerry traveled to several family church camps.
In 2011 Bob and Gerry moved to Billings, Montana after a long illness and fading health. They have been residents of Marquis at Grand Park, making many new friends. The family would like to thank the staff there for the extraordinary care they have given Bob over the last two years.
Bob is survived by his wife Gerry, his children Steve Rebecca Johnson of El Paso TX, Robert Paula Johnson of Las Cruces NM, Renee Mike Monday of Billings MT, nine grandchildren, Christen Brandon Ramsey of Amarillo TX, Jared Johnson of San Antonio TX, Joel Johnson of Las Cruces NM, Michael Johnson of Arlington TX, Kaitlin, Karly, and Kaleb Monday of Billings MT, Micaela and Mackenzie Landa of El Paso TX and one great grandchild, Myla Monroe Ramsey of Amarillo TX.
Funeral services are at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at 21st Street Church of Christ in Clovis, NM with Larry Tittle officiating. Bob will be laid to rest at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis, New Mexico.
