Services for Robie Lee Matlock, 89, of Clovis will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, November 20, 2006 at Steed-Todd Funeral Home. Dr. Herbert Bergstrom will officiate. Burial will follow at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Matlock peacefully passed away on November 17, 2006 at the Bee Hive Homes in Clovis. She was born October 27, 1917 in Hall County, Texas and moved to New Mexico with her parents and brothers when she was three weeks old. Her parents were both teachers; her father was also a Nazarene minister. The family moved often until settling in Ranchvale in 1932 when Robie Lee was in the eighth grade.
Robie eloped with Damon Matlock on February 8, 1936 in Tucumcari, New Mexico before graduating from Ranchvale High in May 1936. A son, Charles Damon Matlock, was born to them in May of 1937.
Robie Lee and her husband farmed in the Ranchvale community until he surrendered to the ministry. In 1945, they re-entered the education system, attending Eastern New Mexico University in Portales where Mrs. Matlock received her degree in Music Education and History.
During the fall of 1948, the family moved to CA so that Damon could attend seminary near Berkeley. Robie attended one semester at the seminary, then began working for an insurance firm in San Francisco and later worked in a child care center in Richmond. She started teaching in Napa, CA and later became the principal of the school. Eventually they settled in Sacramento, CA where she received her Masters Degree and did graduate work while continuing to teach as a reading resource instructor.
While in CA she was active in churches as well as Association and State work, being Sunbeam State worker, Associational Youth Director, and Camp Director for several years.
Mrs. Matlock retired from teaching in 1980 to move back to Clovis due to her husbands health. They joined Central Baptist Church where Robie Lee was a faithful member of the Church Choir and Glory Choir.
She was a member of many organizations during her lifetime: the Auxiliary at Clovis Hospital; the P.T.A.; International Depression Glass Club of Sacramento, CA; the Senior Citizen Adult Group, Baxter Curran Hall; the Curry County Extension Club, belonging to Ranchvale Extension Club; and the National Educators of America. She received the Community Leaders and Noteworthy American Award in 197576 in Sacramento.
Mrs. Matlock traveled extensively. One highlight of her life was directing a 100-voice choir in the First Baptist Church in Panama City, Panama during a revival in which her husband was the Evangelist.
She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and a friend to all. She loved her Lord. For enjoyment she liked to garden, crochet, knit, quilt, scrapbook her hundreds of photographs, watch Wheel of Fortune, and read.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Harriet Matlock of CA; granddaughter, Debbie Matlock of AZ; two grandsons - Charles Matlock of CA, Todd Matlock and wife, Linda, of CA; 4 great grandchildren - Andrew Yamane and Elizabeth Yamane of AZ, Tiera Beebe and Damon Philip Matlock of CA.
She was preceded in death by both parents, Mr. Mrs. A.I. Metcalf; her husband, Damon, in 1990; her brother, Ivy Metcalf in 2002; her son, Charles Damon Matlock in 2003; and her eldest brother, J.M. Metcalf in 2003.
Robie Lee had requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Christian Childrens Home in Portales.
