Ida Sue Hightower, 74, of Melrose, NM, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family in Lubbock, TX on March 1, 2018. She was born on February 6, 1944 to Clint and Beulah Acker Lockett in Clovis, NM.
Sue grew up on the Litchfield farm 3 miles north of Melrose. She became a Christian on June 20, 1954 and was a member of First Baptist Church for 64 years. She was blessed with musical talents and began playing the piano for First Baptist Church when she was 14 years old. Sue was elected to play the organ in 1963 and has served as the church organist since then. Sue was very active in the First Baptist Church. She loved her Sunday school class and enjoyed helping prepare meals for the youth on Wednesdays. Sue loved working in her yard and had the most beautiful flowers. She had a love for dancing and most of all, spending time with her kitty, Boots, whom she loved very much. Her positive attitude and love for the Lord was evident even in her final days. Sue was also the Office Manager at Melrose Grain & Elevator for 42 years.
Preceding her in death are her parents, Clint and Beulah Lockett; sister, Ellen Burns; and brother, Dale Lockett. She is survived by her husband, Donald Hightower of Melrose, NM; daughters, Brenda Wilson of Hobbs, NM and Pamela Hightower of Hobbs, NM; and sister, Charlyne Dennis of CA; and 3 grandchildren, Tanner, Tyler, and Halli.
Services will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2018, 2:30pm at First Baptist Church in Melrose, NM, with Brother Durwood Wofford, officiating. Burial to immediately follow at Melrose Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Hollaway, Ernest Riley, Barry Green, Johnny Lay, Jim Lay, Steve Boyd and Tuffy Pinnell. Honorary bearers will be all farmers and ranchers in the area.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Melrose Cemetery Association.
