Sylvia Herndon

Sylvia Mae Herndon, 88, of Clovis, New Mexico, died Friday, November 3, 2006 at her home in Clovis, New Mexico. She was born on July 25, 1918 in Pawnee, Oklahoma to Issac and Ida Mae Hawkins. She was baptized in the Central Baptist Church of Clovis, New Mexico.

Sylvia met P. H. Herndon Sr. when he was a sheep rancher in Pawnee, Okla. They were married on July 14, 1936 in Liberal Kansas. P. H. and Sylvia moved to Clovis in 1941 and started ranching at Grier, New Mexico, where Sylvia became a homemaker and helped P. H. run the ranch. Her greatest enjoyment was her family. She was a loving mother and grandmother, whose whole life revolved around her family. Sylvia was very proud of her Choctaw Indian heritage. Her mother, Ida Mae was an original enrollee in the Choctaw tribe in Oklahoma. One of Sylvia's favorite sayings was what goes around always comes around.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, P. H. Herndon Sr. in 1978; her parents Issac and Ida Mae Hawkins; two brothers, Nick Hawkins, Kenneth Hawkins; half brothers, Engle Southard, Gentry Southard, Archie Southard; two half sisters, Myra Givers and Eva Southard; one daughter, Jerri Roberts; one granddaughter, Wendi Homer and one great-granddaughter Allie Homer.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Lovelace Tom of Clovis, N. M., Cindy Anderson Leroy of Clovis, N. M.; one son, P. H. Herndon Jr., Barbie of Hendersonville, Tenn. and grandchildren, Tammy Durbin Bill of Hammondsville, Ohio and Steven Roberts Rhonda of Clovis, N. M. and Traci Bombarger Chris of Austin, Texas, Shalei and Melissa Erramouspe of Clovis, N. M., Caleb and Jenny Herndon of Hendersonville, Tenn., Roger Billingsley Kim of Lubbock, TX and Deon Billingsley, Darance Chrystal Lewis and Pal Hawkins Herndon of Clovis, N. M., ten great-grand children and one brother Raymond Hawkins Thelma of Tulsa, Ok.

Pallbearers will be Tom Lovelace, Leroy Anderson, Steven Roberts, Darance Lewis, Roger Billingsley, and Deon Billingsley.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Clyde Montague, Ronnie Montague, Brian Guthals, Wandel Massey, Mark McKay, Michael Garrett and Bruce Daly.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at Steed-Todd Chapel with Skip Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Mission Garden of Memories.
