Virginia Ginny Fleetwood McGinnis of Clovis, 91, died Friday, August 18, 2006 at Holmgreen Center of Trinity Towers in Corpus Christi, TX after a four-month illness. She had been living with her daughter, Mary Goodwin, in Port Aransas, TX, since January.
Ginny was born in Philadelphia, PA, May 10, 1915 to Roy and Rachael Neal. She was the oldest of three children. Her family moved to Haskell, TX, and then to Plainview, TX, where she graduated from high school and married Fred McGinnis Oct. 31, 1935. They were married for 67 years.
In 1936 she and Fred moved to Clovis and started Fred McGinnis Co., a real estate and insurance company, in 1950. She headed of the insurance department until she retired.
Ginny was a member of First United Methodist Church where she was superintendent of the Junior Department for 25 years and a member president of the Womens Bible Class. She was A Friend of the Library and supported the need for the new library. She had four loves: learning, playing bridge, writing, and traveling. After her two children graduated from college, she attended ENMU graduating Magna Cum Laude. Learning to play bridge at age 13, she was a long time member of several bridge clubs. She mainly wrote about her childhood and published two childrens stories. She vacationed with her family throughout the U.S. and traveled internationally to 15 countries. She was also a talented seamstress, did needlework, painted, and grew beautiful flowers.
She was preceded in death by her son, Michael McGinnis; her husband, Fred McGinnis; and her brother, Roy Neal, Jr. of Lubbock, TX.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Roger Goodwin of Port Aransas, TX; three step-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren of Corpus Christi, TX; her sister, Volna Newell of Clovis; five nephews and one niece; seven grand nephews and nieces, including Shannon Joey Fallis of Clovis; and five great-grand nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held in the chapel at First United Methodist Church, Wednesday, August 30, at 10:00 am. Rev. Ran Loy will officiate.
Burial will be later at Lawn Haven Memorial Garden in Clovis.
