Virginia Smith

Virginia Katherine Hightower Smith, age 90, beloved mother and grandmother, was born January 10, 1917, in Melrose, New Mexico. She passed away peacefully November 29, 2007 at Prairie Acres Nursing Home, Friona, Texas following a long illness.

She is survived by three daughters: Mava Kay Provenico Jake, Las Cruces, NM; Sharon Zuhlke, Houston, TX and Betty Cleaun Newman Gene, Portales, NM. Three sons: Dr. Alfred R. Dick Smith David Giragosian, Houston, TX; Jimmie Dale Smith Barbara, Melrose, NM; Randal K. Butch Smith Margaret, Melrose, NM and special family friend Marlene Smith, Albuquerque, NM., 16 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, J.D. Jake Smith, son, Jerry P. Smith and her parents Ernest and Mae Hightower as well as sisters Alpha Phillips Mort, Lucy Batdorff Leon and brother Bud Hightower Mert.

Katherine was a lifetime resident of Melrose and she retired from the Melrose Public Schools Cafeteria. She was an active, life-time member of the Melrose United Methodist Church.

A celebration of Katherines life will be held on Tuesday, December 4, 2007, 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Melrose with Danny Sanders officiating. Interment will follow at the Melrose Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Greg Smith, Jason Smith, J.D. Smith, Dennis Smith, Jeffery D. Smith, Leighton Hilburn, Quinton Hilburn, Richard Zuhlke, and Ronnie Zuhlke.

Memorial contributions maybe made to the First United Methodist Church in Melrose.

The family will be at the home of Jimmie Smith 1174 CR K in Melrose.
