Viva Laney

April 10, 1928 — May 1, 2014

Viva Irene Gonser Laney, 86, of Melrose went home to be with her Lord on May 1, 2014. On April 10, 1928, in Doby Springs, OK, triplets were born to Frank and Jessie Gonser. Vada was the firstborn, followed by Viva, then Veda. These triplets were the final addition to the family of eight kids. The Gonser family moved to New Mexico during the Dust Bowl and settled as farmers in Melrose. Viva attended Melrose High School where she met GH Jr. Laney and they were married December 20, 1947. GH Jr. and Viva were blessed with two daughters Donna Laney Lay of Melrose and Sherolyn Laney Bostwick of Clovis.

Viva was an active member of First Baptist Church Melrose. There she served in the Church Choir, was a Sunday School teacher and a codirector of the kitchen for many years. She was a lifetime member of the Melrose community and was very active in all community events. At Plains Regional Medical Center Viva served with the Pink Lady Auxiliary for over twenty years.

Viva activity participated in the lives of her five grandchildren and twelve greatgrandchildren. She is survived by her daughters Donna, wife of Jim Lay of Melrose Sherolyn, wife of James Bostwick of Clovis. Grandchildren, Levi Lay of Dimmitt, TX Laney and Jubal Pierce of Melrose Toby and Kimberly Bostwick of Melrose Liberty and Frank Sobey of Amarillo, TX Tandee and Neal Delk of Melrose, twelve great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Viva was preceded in death by her husband GH Jr. Laney, Logan Houston Lay her great grandchild, and all brothers and sisters.

The Rev. Durward Woffard will officiate the service at Melrose First Baptist Church on Monday, May 5, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Melrose Cemetery. Casket bearers will be her grandsons and grandsonsinlaw. Honorary casket bearers are her Thursday afternoon Coke ladies.
