Wayne H. Dick Higgs was born on January 27, 1925 in Mound Township, Effingham County, Illinois to Virgil Guy Higgs and Myrtle Evelyn Larimer Higgs. He was born again at Salem Methodist Church in Effingham County, Illinois at the age of 14.
Dick proudly served our country as a Marine Pvt. 1st Class from January 19, 1944 until honorably discharged on November 29, 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded by a mortar shell on March 22, 1945 on Iwo Jima. He served as a Machine Gun Crewman and was qualified as a Rifle Marksman. He served with A Co., 1st Battalion, 28th Regiment, 5th Division. He was with the regiment that raised the flag on Mt. Suribachi.
He moved to Clovis in 1951 to work with the NM Highway Dept. as an Equipment Operator and Assistant Highway Foreman for the next 36 years, retiring October 31, 1987. He volunteered with the New Mexico Mounted Patrol, Troop 24, auxiliary to New Mexico State Police from 1974 to 2004, retiring as 2nd Lieutenant, he also did volunteer work at Sivells Baptist Camp in Cloudcroft, New Mexico through the New Mexico Baptist Convention.
He was a member of Parkland Baptist Church, VFW Capital Post 3015, DAV Chapter 6, Military Order of Purple Heart, Iwo Jima Survivors and Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. He was inducted by the Cannon Airman Leadership Schools Class of 2007B into the ALS Hall of Heroes on December 7, 2006, the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, as their 18th member.
He married Lillian Richards on September 25, 1954 in Clovis, New Mexico. We owned Your Health Food Shoppe for 21 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Irene Tucker and one brother, Jake Higgs. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Higgs of the home three sisters, Rose Williams, Ruth Boaz and Lou Ella Goldsborough and one brother Pete Higgs, all of Altamont, Illinois.
Funeral services are at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 13, 2013 at SteedTodd Funeral Home Chapel in Clovis, NM with Pastor Bruce Kirby officiating and Rev. Wayne Boydstun assisting.
Burial will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis, NM. Casket bearers are Alan Brockmeirer, John Jones, Rusty Berry, Bill Reed, Tip Fullerton and Jack Manning.
