Wesley Shafer

Wesley Ezekiel Shafer, also known as Junior, of Grady, New Mexico, passed away on August 29, 2021 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 Thursday, September 2, 2021, at Grady Baptist Church with Greg Martin officiating. Burial will follow at San Jon Cemetery. Arrangements are by Steed Todd Funeral Home. Junior was born in Tucumcari, New Mexico to Joe and Ina Shafer on April 21, 1940. He grew up in the San Jon area where he met the love of his life, Eddie Rae Southerland, whom he married on June 29, 1962 in the parsonage of the San Jon Baptist Church. Junior retired from Farmers’ Electric in January of 1998. After retirement, he worked for the USDA going to different farms and ranches conducting surveys. One of the proudest things that he was involved in was being the mayor of the Village of Grady. He was a council member for 8 years, and then he was elected the mayor March of 1998 and served as mayor for over 23 years. Junior was a devoted husband, father, and papa. He was a member of Grady Baptist Church. For many years the highlight of his week was to go to senior dances. Now he is dancing in the sky! He was preceded in death by his beautiful bride, Eddie Rae Shafer; by his parents Joe and Ina, and 1 sister. Junior’s memory will be cherished by his daughters, Vicky Haggerton of Carlsbad; and Tresa (Stuart) Pond of Grady. He was blessed with 3 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren as well as 1 brother and 4 sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. Serving as pallbearers will be Sam Starkey, Shane Collins, Bucky Stone, Dusty Stone, Kyson Stone, and Jimmy Schell. Honorary pallbearers are Taylor, Taris, Jaya and Baron Smith; Danny, Alora, Hayden, Jaxton, and Kinsley Shetter; Dustin and Chelsie Mudgett.
